Starting today, we have the opportunity to celebrate our friends from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America as NextHome recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month.
The national celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 when California Representative George E. Brown pushed his fellow lawmakers to recognize Hispanic Heritage Week. For the next 20 years, presidents from Nixon to Reagan each issued official proclamations, setting aside one week to honor Hispanic culture.
By 1988, the Hispanic population had grown, and so had the national desire to make this celebration extend throughout an entire month. Since 1988, September 15th through October 15th has been declared Hispanic Heritage Month. The dates overlap with the Independence Day celebrations of eight different Latin nations.

Hispanic American real estate professionals fill a vital role in our communities. From recent immigrants to families who have called this land home for generations, more than 62.6 million people in the U.S. trace their genealogy to Hispanic nations. Our Hispanic population’s size and influence leave an enduring imprint on our communities. At 19 percent of the total population, Hispanic people make up America’s largest minority group.
“Since the beginning, our country has drawn strength and insights from Hispanic writers, scientists, soldiers, doctors, entrepreneurs, academics, and leaders in labor and government,” says the 2022 National Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation. “Our culture has been enriched by the rhythms, art, literature, and creativity of Hispanic peoples. And our deepest values have been informed by the love of family and faith that is at the core of so many Hispanic communities. All of these contributions help us realize the promise of America for all Americans.”

Hispanic homeownership rates have experienced steady growth over the past eight years. Today, more than 9.2 million Hispanic homeowner households strengthen our communities and bring vibrancy to American life.

In 2022, Latinos added a net total of 349,000 homeowner households, one of the largest single-year gains for Latinos in the past 10 years, according to The State of Hispanic Homeownership Report®️ from the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals®. These gains came in spite of rising interest rates and a difficult buyers market. Despite the remarkable progress, Hispanic families still face barriers to homeownership through service gaps.
“Looking ahead, I want to increase access to programs and affordable housing for Hispanic families in my community,” Juan added. “Too many promising goals and dreams are hindered by barriers to homeownership. Through targeted programs, grants, and partnerships, more Hispanic families could have the opportunity to purchase homes and start building generational wealth through real estate. Homeownership has created financial stability, independence, and prosperity for families looking to put down roots. There is still vital work to be done, but the determination and resilience of those who came before us inspires me to keep working to open doors for the next generation.”
